Tasoula Vervenioti “Discussion with Tasoula Vervenioti about her new book “The Female Fighters of the Democratic Army, 1946–1949”
The large-scale participation of women in the Democratic Army of Greece was a transformative event for Greek society as a whole, one that was difficult for society to comprehend, interpret, and incorporate into its broader understanding of the past—and remains so even today. The aim of this book is not to idealize the actions of the women who fought in the Democratic Army, but to document them and, in doing so, make them visible. Historiography offers relatively few representations of women who participated in armed civil conflicts, which made this undertaking particularly challenging.
Since 2000, following United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, research into the role of women in wars and armed conflicts has begun to expand. As a general conclusion, we might say that women are not merely victims of war, but also agents of social change.
Εxceptionally, this seminar will take place at Sahel Bookcafé Bar, 209 Ippokratous Street.
The discussion will feature the Politics of Liberation team, Eirini Dafermou, and the author of the book.
Η τόσο μεγάλη συμμετοχή των γυναικών στον Δημοκρατικό Στρατο αποτέλεσε ένα ανατρεπτικό γεγονός για όλη την ελληνική κοινωνία, το οποίο ήταν δύσκολο να το κατανοήσει, να το ερμηνεύσει και να το εντάξει -ακόμα και σήμερα- στη συλλογιστική της. Ο στόχος αυτού του βιβλίου δεν είναι να εξιδανικεύσει τη δράση των μαχητριών του Δημοκρατικού Στρατού, αλλά να την καταγράψει, ώστε να την καταστήσει ορατή. Η ιστοριογραφία δεν διαθέτει πολλές αναπαραστάσεις γυναικών που συμμετείχαν σε ένοπλες εμφύλιες συγκρούσεις, γι΄ αυτό το εγχείρημα ήταν δύσκολο. Το 2000, μετά το Ψήφισμα 1325 του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ, η έρευνα για τον ρόλο των γυναικών στους πολέμους έχει αρχίσει να αναπτύσεται. Ως γενικό συμπέρασμα θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι οι γυναίκες δεν είναι απλώς θύματα των πολέμων αλλά και φορείς κοινωνικής αλλαγής.
Εκτάκτως, το σεμινάριο θα πραγματοποιηθεί στο Σαχέλ Βιβλιοκαφέ Μπαρ, Ιπποκράτους 209.
Στη συζήτηση θα συμμετάσχουν η ομάδα του Politics of Liberation, η Ειρήνη Δαφέρμου και η συγγραφέας του βιβλίου.

Tasoula Vervenioti is a historian who specialises in the social history of the 1940s, particularly the experiences of women and children during this period. She has written five books, two of which have won state prizes. (2004, 2022). In her latest book, Οι άμαχοι του ελληνικού εμφυλίου. Η δυναμική της μνήμης [The Civilians of the Greek Civil War: The Dynamics of Memory] (Koukida, 2021), she combines archival research with oral testimony. He has participated in numerous conferences and written several articles in Greek, English, French and German. Since 2011, she has been at the forefront of organising seminars to establish Oral History Groups (OHG), which now form a network spread throughout Greece.
