Giorgos Velegrakis – Petros Psareas «”We are living in an “unequal dystopia in the making”»
For decades, the mainstream answers to the climate crisis – namely sustainable development and green capitalism – have not only failed but have led to the deepening of the crisis. They are not solutions, but sophisticated strategies for commodifying nature, shifting costs to the poor and greenwashing a system hell-bent on infinite growth.
This talk argues that the ecological crisis is not a technical problem but a political one, rooted in the very structures of capitalism. Moving beyond a critique of the failed status quo, it draws on the hard-won lessons from the front lines of socioecological struggles, particularly in crisis-ridden Greece, to ask the difficult questions: Why have our strategies been defeated? Where can we find the seeds of alternatives rooted in the power of grassroots movements and collective action?
Rejecting both technocratic fixes and reformist illusions, this talk makes a compelling case for a radical ecosocialist transformation. It is a call to build, fight and reclaim our future from the logic of capital, towards a necessary vision of a political strategy that rises to the challenge of the emergency we face.
This talk is based on and serves as a presentation of the speakers’ book Ecological Crisis and Left Strategies: The Contemporary Greek Experience in a Regional Context published recently by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung - Office in Greece.

Για δεκαετίες, οι κυρίαρχες απαντήσεις στην κλιματική κρίση –η βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη και ο πράσινος καπιταλισμός– όχι μόνο απέτυχαν να την αντιμετωπίσουν, αλλά συνέβαλαν στην περαιτέρω όξυνσή της. Δεν αποτελούν λύσεις, αλλά εξελιγμένες στρατηγικές εμπορευματοποίησης της φύσης, μετακύλισης του κόστους στους πιο αδύναμους και «πρασινίσματος» ενός συστήματος που βασίζεται στην αέναη ανάπτυξη.
Η ομιλία αυτή υποστηρίζει ότι η οικολογική κρίση δεν είναι πρωτίστως ένα τεχνικό, αλλά ένα βαθιά πολιτικό πρόβλημα, ριζωμένο στις ίδιες τις δομές του καπιταλισμού. Πέρα από την κριτική του αποτυχημένου status quo, αντλεί διδάγματα από τις κοινωνικο-οικολογικές αντιστάσεις και τους αγώνες των τελευταίων δεκαετιών, ιδιαίτερα στην Ελλάδα της κρίσης, για να θέσει ορισμένα κρίσιμα ερωτήματα: Γιατί οι στρατηγικές μας ηττήθηκαν; Πού μπορούμε να εντοπίσουμε τα σπέρματα εναλλακτικών λύσεων που θεμελιώνονται στη δύναμη των κινημάτων βάσης και της συλλογικής δράσης;
Απορρίπτοντας τόσο τις τεχνοκρατικές «λύσεις» όσο και τις μεταρρυθμιστικές αυταπάτες, η ομιλία διατυπώνει ένα ισχυρό επιχείρημα υπέρ ενός ριζοσπαστικού οικοσοσιαλιστικού μετασχηματισμού. Αποτελεί ένα κάλεσμα για οργάνωση, αγώνα και διεκδίκηση του μέλλοντός μας απέναντι στη λογική του κεφαλαίου, προτείνοντας ένα πολιτικό σχέδιο αντάξιο της οικολογικής και κοινωνικής έκτακτης ανάγκης που αντιμετωπίζουμε σήμερα.
Η ομιλία αυτή βασίζεται και αποτελεί παρουσίαση του βιβλίου των ομιλητών Ecological Crisis and Left Strategies: The Contemporary Greek Experience in a Regional Context, που εκδόθηκε πρόσφατα από το Ίδρυμα Ρόζα Λούξεμπουργκ – Παράρτημα Ελλάδας.

Giorgos Velegrakis is an adjunct faculty at the University of Crete and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Athens. He has published and edited books and articles on issues of relevance to policy regarding extractivism, political ecology, radical geography, socio-environmental conflicts and movements, the commons, global sustainability transitions and STS. He is member of Undisciplined Environments political ecology research group and the research cooperative commonspace.
Petros Psarreas is a left-wing anticapitalist and ecosocialist activist. He has been involved in several political and social organizations, including the Ecosocialist Network in Greece, the Rproject, the Red Network, and SYRIZA, where he served on the Central Committee and environmental policy bodies before 2015. He is currently a PhD candidate at National Technical University of Athens, researching political economy and the environment, and holds degrees in environmental studies, science and technology studies, and geology.
