Tasoula Vervenioti “Visual History: A slideshow containing 32 photographs of civilians during the Greek Civil War, exploring the dynamics of memory
The book The Civilians of the Greek Civil War: The Dynamics of Memory (Koukkida, Athens, 2021) contains thirty-one photographs. These photographs form the basis of my presentation, which focuses on the experiences of non-combatants during the Greek Civil War (1946–1949). As historical sources, the images play an important role in our understanding of historical reality. Analysing these photos provides a glimpse 'behind the mirror' of this historical period.
Το βιβλίο, Οι Άμαχοι του Ελληνικού Εμφυλίου. Η Δυναμική της Μνήμης (Κουκκίδα, Αθήνα, 2021) περιέχει τριάντα μία φωτογραφίας. Αυτές θα αποτελέσουν τη βάση της παρουσίασης, η οποία αφορά τον ελληνικό εμφύλιο (1946-1949) με επίκεντρο τους άμαχους. Οι εικόνες, ως ιστορικές πηγές, αποτελούν σημαντικό παράγοντα για την κατανόηση της ιστορικής πραγματικότητας. Η ανάλυση των φωτογραφιών δίνει τη δυνατότητα για μια ματιά «πίσω από τον καθρέπτη» για τη συγκεκριμένη ιστορική περίοδο.

Tasoula Vervenioti is a historian who specialises in the social history of the 1940s, particularly the experiences of women and children during this period. She has written five books, two of which have won state prizes. (2004, 2022). In her latest book, Οι άμαχοι του ελληνικού εμφυλίου. Η δυναμική της μνήμης [The Civilians of the Greek Civil War: The Dynamics of Memory] (Koukida, 2021), she combines archival research with oral testimony. He has participated in numerous conferences and written several articles in Greek, English, French and German. Since 2011, she has been at the forefront of organising seminars to establish Oral History Groups (OHG), which now form a network spread throughout Greece.
