Argiris Archakis “Tracing the infiltration of racism in a corpus of anti-racist texts – and some thoughts/observations from a critical literacy perspective”
Refugee and migratory movements to the wider European space have led to a variety of attitudes ranging from solidarity to xenophobia and racism against migrants and refugees. In this context, this contribution aims to reveal the ways racist perceptions very often now emerge in the (apparently) anti-racist discourse, which ends up reflecting inequalities, masking and reproducing them. The talk aims to present the way in which we have formed a corpus of Greek anti-racist texts in order to investigate whether and to what extent racist views and perceptions are embedded in it. We piled up 830 texts or textual extracts from 41 different sources, numbering about 500 thousand words. Having recourse to tools from the field of Critical Discourse Analysis, we found that racist stances intrude into anti-racist texts through two main pathways, namely via discrimination and assimilation, thus giving rise to the phenomenon of fluid racism (Weaver 2016). The findings of our analysis invite, in the context of critical literacy, to a reflection in relation to the way anti-racist texts are formed.
Οι προσφυγικές και μεταναστευτικές μετακινήσεις προς τον ευρύτερο ευρωπαϊκό χώρο οδήγησαν σε ποικίλες στάσεις που κυμαίνονται από αλληλέγγυες έως ξενοφοβικές και ρατσιστικές προς τους/τις μετανάστες/τριες και τους/τις πρόσφυγες/ισσες. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, επιδίωξή μας είναι να αποκαλύψουμε ότι οι ρατσιστικές αντιλήψεις πολύ συχνά πλέον, αναδύονται και στον (φαινομενικά) αντιρατσιστικό λόγο, ο οποίος, καταλήγει να απηχεί ανισότητες, να τις συγκαλύπτει και να τις αναπαράγει. Στόχος της ομιλίας μας είναι να παρουσιάσουμε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο διαμορφώσαμε ένα σώμα ελληνικών αντιρατσιστικών κειμένων προκειμένου να διερευνήσουμε αν και σε ποιο βαθμό εμφιλοχωρούν σε αυτό ρατσιστικές απόψεις και αντιλήψεις. Καταλήξαμε στην καταχώρηση 830 κειμένων ή κειμενικών αποσπασμάτων που προέρχονται από 41 διαφορετικές πηγές και αριθμούν περίπου 500 χιλιάδες λέξεις. Αξιοποιώντας εργαλεία από τον χώρο της Κριτικής Ανάλυσης Λόγου, διαπιστώσαμε ότι οι ρατσιστικές θέσεις παρεισφρέουν στα αντιρατσιστικά κείμενα μέσω δύο βασικών οδών, της διάκρισης (discrimination) και της αφομοίωσης (assimilation), διαμορφώνοντας το φαινόμενο του ρευστού ρατσισμού (Weaver 2016). Τα ευρήματα της ανάλυσής μας δίνουν το έναυσμα, στο πλαίσιο του κριτικού γραμματισμού, για αναστοχασμό σε σχέση με τον τρόπο διαμόρφωσης των αντιρατσιστικών κειμένων.

Argiris Archakis is Professor of Discourse Analysis and Sociolinguistics at the Department of Language and Literature at the University of Patras, where he has been teaching since 1997. His recent research interests focus mainly on issues related to discourse and migration, critical literacy, narrative constructions of identities, and political discourse. His articles and books have been published by prominent international and Greek publishers. His most recent book, From National to Post-National Discourse: Immigrant Identities and Critical Education, was published by Patakis in 2020. He is the principal investigator of the TRACE research project “Tracing racism in anti-racist discourse: A critical approach to European public discourse on the migration and refugee crisis” (TRACE/HFRI-FM17-42, ELIDEK 2019-2022).
