seminar
This seminar will attempt to account for the phenomenon of banditry and its transformations in Greece, from the foundation of the Greek state to the end of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be given to versions of the phenomenon which resemble the “ideal types” of “social” and “political” banditry. Subsequently the focus will shift to those historical cases in which the Greek version of banditry met with other forms of collective actions and was, to a certain extent, politicized, namely the case of banditry of 1921-1922 on the island of Crete, the case of 1914-1925 on the island of Samos, and, finally, the tragic 1940s across Greece.
